Everybody knows that Franco Mastantuono is held in high regard in his home country, Argentina. When the 18-year-old was signed by Real Madrid in the summer, his fans from home joined arm-in-arm to celebrate.
Of course, it was a shame that Mastantuono had to leave River Plate so young. Fans would have ideally liked to see more of him. However, when Real Madrid comes calling, it's a call that must be answered. Some calls aren't returned a second time, after all.
Besides, the World Champions Argentina know that Franco Mastantuono is in great hands now. As they look to rebuild in the post-Messi era, with more of him to come in the World Cup, of course, they need to turn their attention to new heroes.
Franco Mastantuono donned Lionel Messi's jersey number for Argentina
Last night against Ecuador, Franco Mastantuono was given the biggest honor by Argentina. Mastantuono wore Lionel Messi's infamous number 10 jersey, as the Inter Miami forward could not attend the match.
Originally, it was believed that Thiago Almada would be given the number 10 jersey. However, he was unwell and could not make the match either. So, instead, Mastantuono wore the number 10.
And that's not to be overlooked. Sure, some fans might see it as just a number on the back of a player, but it means a lot to Argentinians.
Before Lionel Messi, the legend Diego Maradona wore the number 10 jersey for Argentina. Those two players are regarded as two of the best players in the game, and they certainly defined their generations.
So, Real Madrid fans slept well last night. They slept well, knowing that the young player Florentino Perez entrusted was given one of the biggest honors by the current Champions of the world.
Pretty iconic night for Real Madrid. Although Mastantuono's honor was only short-term (for now), it's cool to know that Real Madrid has Argentina's number 10, Brazil's number 10, France's number 10 and England's number 10.
Those four countries could very well make up the semifinals of the upcoming World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
As Mastantuono looks ahead, it's important for him to remain as humble as he's been up to this point in his career. Sure, he plays for Real Madrid now, and he's at the highest level with the Argentina national team, but it's only the beginning.
Mastantuono must put his head down and learn from those experienced players around him.
