Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe had a difficult string of months to close the 2025/26 season, but his reputation is back intact - and then some - as he is on a goal scoring spree in the 2026 World Cup. Mbappe is tied with Lionel Messi for the Golden Boot lead after adding another decisive brace, putting two past Sweden in the Round of 32 to make it 18 career World Cup goals and 10 in the knockout stages, the latter a new record in the history of football.

Mbappe has spent the last two years since arriving in Madrid fighting tooth and nail to even be considered the best player in his own league, as Barcelona right winger Lamine Yamal was a narrow second to Mbappe's French national teammate in the 2024/25 Ballon d'Or running and is clearly going to be ahead of the Real Madrid star in the 2025/26 awards race.

But if you ask several people, Mbappe should still be held in higher regard than Yamal overall for what he can do when the team around him is clicking and he is in a role where he feels like he is truly "the guy", as evidenced by the scary, record breaking numbers he is putting up with France at this year's World Cup.

Madridistas will 100 percent agree with George Weah

Former Ballon d'Or winner George Weah knows a thing or two about what it takes to make it at the top, and the fellow former Ligue 1 superstar thinks it isn't even close: Kylian Mbappe is by far the best player in the world and above even Lamine Yamal of Barcelona.

Weah said, via the Madrid Zone, “Kylian Mbappe is a phenomenon. Is he better than Lamine Yamal? Everyone knows Mbappe is far away.”

That is high, high praise indeed, and while Real Madrid fans have to respect Yamal deep down for how he has led Barcelona to two La Liga titles over Madrid and has been the face of a Spanisih national team that won the last European Championships, even the Madridistas who were upset with Mbappe's 2025/26 season are going to go to bat for the Frenchman.

Mbappe can put up crazy goal scoring numbers and has the acceleration and raw physical tools to do things nobody else can. He is a historic player internationally for France with his World Cup resume practically speaking for itself, ranking second at such a young age in all time World Cup goals as a nearly two time champion of the competition in just two tries. George Weah is a huge backer, and Madridistas have been whispering what he is saying out loud for a while - that Mbappe is still the cream of the crop in Spanish football.
