New Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho told the club exactly who he wanted the most in the defensive midfield, eyeing Enzo Fernandez as a dream signing and potential upgrade at the No. 6 over the highly inconsistent - and stagnating - Aurelien Tchouameni. But with new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, formerly of Real Madrid, badly wanting to hold onto Enzo and not lose him to the Merengues like left back Marc Cucurella, the Blues have been holding out a wild asking price approaching 150 million euros.
But given Enzo cost Chelsea 121 million euros a few years ago and is significantly better than Tchouameni, whom Real Madrid want 90 million euros for, it isn't actually the most outrageous asking price in the world if Mourinho is sold on him.
Still, Real Madrid sent out a statement telling the world that they are not after Enzo, and unlike the Michael Olise statement, they did not leave room open for interpreting that they would be after the 2022 World Cup winner again this summer.
Enzo Fernandez had himself a game
Enzo Fernandez badly wants a Real Madrid move, and he and agent Javier Pastore, a former PSG star, have been publicly angling for one, too. It has been no secret for months. And now, Enzo has given Real Madrid a concrete reason to regret their decision.
After a horrible showing against Cape Verde, Fernandez more than redeemed himself. Not only did he head home the winner in the 93th minute to complete Argentina's latest World Cup Remontada for a 3-2 win over Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush's Egypt national team, but he played a great game in the middle of the park.
Enzo had three dribbles completed, completed 93 percent of his passes, and produced two brilliant through balls for his country. It was a classic Enzo performance in midfield, and after Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, and Joao Neves totally failed Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portuguese national team against Spain, Enzo's big night against Egypt in the win rang out even more.
The DNA of Real Madrid players is to have guys who step up in the biggest games, and Enzo has done that throughout his career, especially for Argentina. They are favorites to win another World Cup, and you can see why Jose Mourinho wants this guy more than Aurelien Tchouameni or other possible transfer targets. Real have declined both Rodri and Enzo thus far, but they are making Florentino Perez have serious thoughts now.
