Luka Modric is no longer a Real Madrid player, but that does not mean that the fans at the White House have forgotten their Croatian magician or lost any love for a player many felt should never have left the club in the summer 2025 transfer window.
But Modric is still kicking and playing at an elite level for AC Milan, as he is probably their best overall player and one of the best midfielders in the entirety of Serie A. Despite rumors surrounding his future, Ruben Amorim, the new Milan manager, made it clear that he desperately wanted Modric to return, and now the 40 year old is on the cusp of a new deal with the Rossoneri.
While that leaves the door open for Modric to face Real Madrid in the Champions League one day in the 2027/28 season if he stick around for longer, Madridistas will love that Modric is still playing at the highest level for a historic club, but not all the news is beautiful for them on the Lukita front.

Because according to La Gazzetta dello Sport's Andrea Ramazzotti, Luka Modric has decided to officially retire from international football in early October. His last ever game for the country he took to the World Cup Final will be on Oct 6 in the UEFA Nations League against the current world champions Spain, who last beat Croatia 3-0 at the 2024 European Championships (another tournament that La Roja eventually won).
Modric already left the pitch with many assuming that his cruel defeat to former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portuguese national team would be his last ever in Croatia checkered colors, but while that was indeed Lukita's last ever World Cup game, the 40 year old will still give it a few more gos for the Croatia national team before riding off into the sunset in the Fall this year.
It is even more sad for Real Madrid fans to see Modric retire from Croatia, and even though everyone knew it was coming, the realization will be even tougher to see. For Spanish Madridistas, facing him two final times in late September and early October, even in the Nations League, will feel special, especially after being confirmed world champions. There is something that will always be special about Modric in a Croatia shirt, especially since his best times with his country came during his best times with Real Madrid.
