Despite getting sacked over seven months ago, Xabi Alonso's tenure at Real Madrid is still a popular talking subject among fans and after his Chelsea side got off to a winning start in the Premier League this season, the Spaniard and his time at Real Madrid is once again being talked about, however this time the media is chiming in with their say.
While discussing Xabi Alonso and his system, his former teammate at Liverpool Jamie Carragher had his take on the end of Xabi's time at Real Madrid and he didn't pull any punches, putting the blame on Vinicius Jr for the managers downfall. On Sky Sports Monday Night Football Carragher went on to say:
"If we're being totally honest, Xabi Alonso lost his job because of Vinicius Jr. He wasn't really happy with the situation, he went crying to the owner and as Real Madrid always do they sided with the player. "Jamie Carragher
The finger is once again being pointed at Vinicius Jr
While some might think it's harsh to put all the blame on one player, he's right. Xabi Alonso had a good thing going at Real Madrid, despite some losses to Liverpool, Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, and Real Sociedad, Real Madrid were sitting seven points clear at the top of La Liga and second in the Champions League league table before Vinicius Jr threw his temper tantrum in El Clasico and after that the writing was on the wall for Xabi Alonso.
Alonso was tougher on Vinicius than Carlo Ancelotti used to be, demanding more out of the player, and with Alonso building his system around Kylian Mbappe it all ruffled the Brazilian's feathers from what he had been used to, leading to him turning on the manager. And once Vinicius turned on the manager, all the players in the team who back Vini and the hierarchy that backs Vini decided he was right and Alonso was wrong and sacked the manager.
Then Alvaro Arbeloa was brought it, made an even bigger mess, but gave Vinicius more freedom in the team and he produced better numbers than he was producing under Xabi Alonso so Vini was happy again which is all that matters to Florentino Perez.
So far the Brazilian hasn't had a great start to life under Jose Mourinho with a disappointing pre-season and a lackluster showing against Espanyol on matchday one, so will Vinicius turn on Mourinho like he turned on Alonso? Only time will tell.
