Real Madrid want Jose Mourinho to come in and be ruthless about players and areas of the squad that need improving, and president Florentino Perez has already made it clear that Mou is going to get more power than most managers at the club. And he has earned it, not just from what he has done in world football but also in how he managed Madrid the first time around, bringing a winning culture back to the club after their back to back trophyless campaigns at that time.
Florentino has officially announced the hiring of Mourinho, and now the Portuguese interntional can really get to work. Already, Real Madrid have made two substantial upgrades to the defense in free agent center back Ibrahima Konate and world-class right back Denzel Dumfries, fresh off another easy Serie A title with Inter Milan.
Next up after a right back and center back is a left back. According to Miguel Serrano, Jose Mourinho is not convinced by Alvaro Carreras as the starting left back. He has apparently been told bad things about Carreras by those at Benfica, the club he just came from before Madrid, and Real's last coach Alvaro Arbeloa.
A Barcelona product who actually makes sense for Real Madrid
Mou's goal is to sign someone at least as good as Carreras who can compete with him, and the name he has in mind is indeed much better than Carreras. Because Serrano is also reporting that Jose is a big fan of Chelsea star Marc Cucurella and would like to sign him from his former player and former Madrid coach Xabi Alonso.
Cucurella, like Real Madrid's other big Chelsea target Enzo Fernandez, has made it patently obvious since the Liam Rosenior debacle that he wants out of Stamford Bridge. A Barcelona academy product and former Getafe star, Cucurella isn't usually the profile Real Madrid go for at left back, but they do need to beef up their defense.
While Cucurella is not known for his creativity, he is a quality progressor of the ball as a dribbler and works extremely hard for the team. He is the picture of fight and discipline, which is exactly what Mourinho wants and exactly what Real Madrid needs, whereas Alvaro Carreras can get very lazy defensively, which Michael Olise exposed on the world stage.
Real Madrid need the best players in every position, and though he cost 50 million euros, Carreras does not seem to be that guy. He could be in the future, but if Real Madrid want to win the Champions League and stop a PSG three peat, they need guys like European Champion Marc Cucurella.
