Rodri performed a great betrayal this offseason, flirting with Real Madrid for months and then using them to get a move to Barcelona just when Florentino Perez had finally relented to Jose Mourinho and the club by showing the slightest of interest in the Manchester City star following his World Cup Golden Ball performance for champions Spain.

After rejecting Real Madrid as the move fell apart, with Florentino showing a debatable level of interest in the Spanish international, Rodri has now officially moved to Barcelona, signing on for a whopping 76.5 million euros despite only having one year on his contract.

Although a few Madridistas have been so upset about missing out on Rodri that they are railing against the club for the Yan Diomande signing, most have a different perspective. Yes, it is tough to see Barca signing such a quality player, but there are three considerations here. Firstly, Rodri has a troubling injury history and wlll even need back surgery. Secondly, he is quite expensive and above what Florentino Perez wanted to pay for him. Thirdly, he is not the character Real Madrid want if he is willing to lie about his allegiance to them, then go for a hated rival.

Real Madrid don't want players with doubts

And it is the third point that Jose Mourinho, who is famously a person who needs every single member of the club to be all in, hit the nail on the head with in his interview with Josep Pedrelol on El Chiringuito.

Mourinho said, via the Madrid Zone, ā€œRodri? Yes, I spoke to him a couple of times. Real Madrid made him a very good offer, Rodri had doubts. I think the doubts that Rodri had, created doubts for me. I think that Real Madrid cannot have players who doubt. But he was very respectful.ā€

That's exactly it right there. Rodri is a wonderful player, but if he even doubts Real Madrid in the slightest, then there is no point in signing him. It is much better to believe in Aurelien Tchouameni or even someone like Eduardo Camavinga, whom the club actualy wanted to sell in order to bring in Rodri from the Etihad, who isn't as good than believe in a player who does not believe in the club.

Rodri probably got mad, wanted more money, and then used Barcelona. He ultimately got his wish. And now it is up to Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho to make Rodri pay for his decision with regret.
