Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho seemed to have no interest in continuing with young left back Alvaro Carreras despite the fact that the player had only just joined Los Merengues the previous summer transfer window, and Madridistas were actually not surprised to hear that Mourinho wanted to sell him.

After all, Carreras was one of the worst players on the team in the second half of the season, showing poor discipline, no fight, and woeful defensive work in the most important games. He had serious attitude problems, displayed the lowest football IQ of a Real Madrid player in many years, and behaved insubordinately to Alvaro Arbeloa, leading the exiting manager to give Mourinho a negative report.

But amidst interst from Chelsea and former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso, who was the one specifically wanting Carreras for 50 million euros from Benfica instead of his former Bayer Leverkusen star Alex Grimaldo, Jose Mourinho has apparently made a surprising about face.

Jose Mourinho won't give Chelsea their Marc Cucurella replacement

Per a report from Jose Felix Diaz of Diario AS, via Madrid Xtra, Mourinho no longer wants to sell Alvaro Carreras this summer to Chelsea or anybody else. The new Real Madrid manager is suddenly deciding to back the young player and would like to see him compete with new 60 million euro signing Marc Cucurella for the starting left back job at Real Madrid.

It is a surprising twist, but Mourinho may want to see what Carreras has before taking Alvaro Arbeloa's word - or maybe he believes he, as the Special One, can finally get Carreras to take things seriously as a Real Madrid player should. He has done that plenty of times with difficult to manage players at clubs like Chelsea and Inter Milan before.

Chelsea will have to looke elsewhere for the left back to replace Marc Cucurella, but the change in opinion from Jose Mourinho may not necessarily stop the Blues from trying to make an approach for Carreras anyway.

Another thing that may have played into Mourinho's decision is the state of the other left backs. Fran Garcia appears to be close to a sale to another La Liga club with Real Betis interested in both Dani Ceballos and the backup left back. Ferland Mendy's future is uncertain, but he isn't really part of the equation due to injuries. So it looks like the more defensive Cucurella will start and the more attacking Carreras will push him for minutes.
