Real Madrid are planning a massive squad overhaul during the summer transfer window. Off the back of two disastrous back-to-back trophyless seasons the squad is in desperate need of freshening up and with a number of players expected to be departing, that leaves room for the new reinforcements to arrive to hopefully help make the team better. We all know the big names Real have been linked with heading into the summer transfer window, however, a new name has popped up recently and it is said to be a player Jose Mourinho is very keen on bringing to the Bernabeu.

As being reported by theMadridZone on X, Jose Mourinho 'loves' Manchester United fullback Diogo Dalot as a potential back-up right-back option for Real Madrid as he begins to plan his squad ahead of his return to the Bernabeu this summer. With Dani Carvajal set to be departing, Los Blancos are in the market for a back-up right-back, with Trent Alexander-Arnold the only right-back who will be in the team next season.

Jose Mourinho eyes fullback from his Manchester United days

Trent Alexander-Arnold is the undisputed starting right-back and as mentioned earlier once Carvajal leaves he will be the only natural right-back in the squad so it makes sense that Real Madrid would be looking for a right-back in the transfer market this summer with new coach Jose Mourinho hoping to reunite with the Portuguese international that he brought to Manchester United back in 2018.

Much like Real Madrid, Manchester United are also expected to undergo a squad overhaul in the summer as they build their new sqaud under manager Michael Carrick and Dalot is one of the players on the fringe who could end up being sold by the Premier League club to raise funds and clear room for other transfers.

The option of signing Dalot is an interesting one as the 27-year-old brings a different style of fullback play compared to Alexander-Arnold. Dalot is much more of a defensive minded fullback who can also add on the offensive side when needed, whereas Alexander-Arnold is an attack minded fullback, which would be a good balance to have in the position, as each player could contribute to the team in different ways. In the past Mourinho has favored more of a defensive system that Dalot would fit slightly better, but with the lack of creativity elsewhere in the team, Trent's starting role seems to be quite safe heading into next season.

Dalot recently signed a new contract with United until 2028 and carries a value of around €30 million, which is a fair price Real Madrid could easily pay if they really want the player. A number of new arrivals in both the midfield and defense are expected in the summer and Dalot could be one of them to help bring stability back to a backline that has tended to leak in goals for fun in the last two years.
