Real Madrid looked really good against Inter on the offensive end, and even though there was a lot they could have done to limit their rivals on the defensive side of things, they still looked impressive.
The game plan, at least at the time, looked clear: Real Madrid were going to let Inter have the ball and hurt them on counter-presses and counter-attacks. Three were so many sequences where Real Madrid won the ball at a very high area of the pitch, and they ended up scoring both of their goals through that.
Mourinho and Fede Valverde said that the plan was for the team to have more control of the game, which Real Madrid failed to do, but the team executed at least one part of Mourinho’s gameplan really, really well. It reminded fans of the Real Madrid of old, and that is always a good thing.
Real Madrid's counter-attacks vs Inter were brilliant
In the sequences where Real Madrid did not have the ball, they pounced like mad dogs to create dangerous counter-attacking opportunities. The second Vinicius Junior or Jude Bellingham or anyone else won Real Madrid the ball, everyone ran forward and combined incredibly well for some chances in Inter’s box.
Real Madrid ironically only scored their two goals through counter-pressing and not really counter-attacking, but the plethora of chances they created through the latter was clear to see.
Real Madrid finally used the speed and talent they had to good use in terms of counters, and looked formidable going forward.
Were they wasteful in front of goal when they eventually arrived at the end points of their counters? Yes, but that does not mean that the process itself was bad. Real Madrid fans have been hoping for the team to play like this on many occasions, and they finally showed that this was possible.
Los Blancos don’t get the opportunity to play on the counter all that often because they usually keep the ball for long stretches against ‘smaller’ teams, but when it is a game like the one from last night, or a Clasico, or a big knockout game, Real Madrid can finally put the counter-attack to good use.
If they are in this position again, they would have to do a lot of things better. Finishing would need to improve, as would the defending, but the process and sequences of the counter-attacks they produced were very impressive, and hopefully, that will only improve in future games, too.
