Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho claimed that a few boos here and there can actually help players find the better versions of themselves.
Real Madrid were able to comfortably beat Real Sociedad 4-1 at the Bernabeu on Wednesday, but they had to dig deep to find that victory in the second half.
After the first half, there were some boos here and there, particularly for Vinicius Junior. When asked about it generally, he talked about how these boos can help players find better versions of themselves, and how the fans have certain standards that the club would need to adhere to.
He said: “We already know him, and thanks to that, the pressure stems from history. Real Madrid has great players, great teams. Being a fan is one thing, being a player is another. I’m not asking for boos to turn into applause.
“There’s always some justification for it; people were frustrated. A few boos don’t hurt anyone; they even help you grow. There will be matches that are hard-fought to win. In Spain, there are good players, good teams; they aren’t afraid to play against good teams. In other countries, they don’t play, they defend. Real Sociedad played to win.”

This is the correct mentality to have. Real Madrid will always be a club with ridiculously high expectations. The fans would always want the best from their team, because those are the standards they have set for themselves.
Sometimes, when things don’t look pretty or they don’t go Real Madrid’s way, fans have every right to say what they feel. If a player has not performed well for a few games, the fans will always let them know how they feel about it.
That is ultimately what keeps these players in check. Instead of taking it to heart, players could think about what they are doing, and it could prove to be a humbling and enlightening experience at times, as well.
The applause won’t come automatically. The players will have to win the fans over and make them feel like they care as much as the entire stadium does, which is something that Vinicius Junior was able to do quite well against Real Sociedad.
Instead of saying that the players are doing their best and they don’t deserve to be booed, which is something that older managers have said, Mourinho alluded to the standards that the club has set for their fans, as well as the fact that those very standards can help the players find better versions of themselves in the long run. This is the kind of mentality that Real Madrid need these days, and fans should be glad Mourinho feels this way.
