Real Madrid's 2-0 loss to Barcelona in El Clasico sealed the title in the hands of their great rivals to the east while also sealing Real's trophyless status in back to back seasons. Although nothing official has been signaled by President Florentino Perez, it has been taken for fact that Alvaro Arbeloa will not be retained as the Merengues manager following the 2025/26 season.

With the locker room in total disarray and the club sinking faster with each passing week as new controversies destroy the team from within, Perez wants a big name and a strong personality who will be respected by these increasingly insubordinate players. And the most attractive candidate for the job is by far Jose Mourinho.

At this point, it is taken for granted that Mourinho will be the next Real Madrid manager. All the top journalists around Real Madrid think Mourinho is going to go to Madrid, and even reports from Portugal indicate that Benfica are already searching for Mou's replacement.

Jose Mourinho isn't talking to Real Madrid...yet

Speaking at a press conference this weekend, the current Benfica manager addressed the Real Madrid rumors, clarifying that he has not actually had any official talks with Real yet. And he says he won't talk to Real Madrid until the season is over.

Jose Mourinho said, via the Madrid Zone, “I have not had any contact neither with President nor with important people from Real Madrid and until the last League match I won't have it. After that there will be a week in which I have the freedom to talk to whoever I consider.”

A lot of what Mourinho is saying is interesting, because even though he is denying any active contact with Real Madrid, he is not denying the rumors or that it is possible he will go there. And since the rumors have been that his super agent Jorge Mendes is the one driving the conversations, it technically would not be lying for him to say that he is not personally talking to the president of Real Madrid but leaving out that it is his agent who is.

Out of respect, Mourinho isn't going to accelerate talks with Real Madrid until after the season ends, and though Real's season is effectively over and Alvaro Arbeloa done as the coach, they will also not be accelerating until after the 2025/26 campaign is officially done and dusted. Mourinho to Real Madrid is very much alive, and Mou didn't exactly put cold water on it either.
