When the 26/27 season kicks off in August, it is expected that there is going to be a number of new faces on the pitch for Real Madrid. The club is planning a major squad overhaul under new manager Jose Mourinho as they look bounce back following back-to-back trophyless seasons. Mourinho has drawn up a list of targets he wants the club to sign, with one in particular that he is strongly pushing to get over the line as soon as possible.

As being reported by El Debate on X, Jose Mourinho is actively pushing for Inter Milan center-back Alessandro Bastoni to be one of the first major signings of his new project at Real Madrid. The Italian has long been a target of Barcelona however Mourinho has been in contact with the player recently trying to convince him to snub the Camp Nou for the Bernabeu this summer.

Jose Mourinho plans to poach his former clubs top defender

It's safe to say that with Real Madrid looking to rebuild their squad in the summer, the place to start is the defense. The backline has been leaking in goals for fun the last two years and with the departures of David Alaba, Dani Carvajal, and potentially others as well, and adding on top of that the constant injuries to players like Dean Huijsen and Eder Militao and it is obvious why Mourinho would look to bring in defensive reinforecements first, and Bastoni would be a solid candidate to come in and be a difference maker in the team.

The Italian is still only 27-years-old and brings to the table a number of attributes that make him a top candidate to bring in this summer. He's tall (6'3), quick, good with the ball at his feet, aggressive, strong with tackles, and brings winning experience with both Inter Milan and Italy. Bastoni was a part of Italy's Euro 2020 victory as well as winning three Serie A titles and three Copa Italia's with Inter and two Champions League Final appearances in the last four years. He has twice taken home the award for Serie A best defender and has been a step ahead of every defender in Italy for a number of years.

One other attribute Bastoni would add to the backline is the fact that he is left footed, and in an era where it is becoming more prominant to have both a left and right footed center-back in your lineup, a partnership of Bastoni and Militao could be the perfectly balanced partnership, hoping the Brazilian is able to stay fit.

As mentioned earlier Los Blancos aren't the only team eyeing a move for the Italian with Barcelona hot on his trail as well as Bayern Munich always being mentioned. Bastoni carries a value of around €65 million however Inter Milan surely won't be too eager to part with their best defender that easily and would no doubt ask for a fee much higher than that. It's not an exaggerations to say this is one of the most important transfer windows in the recent history of Real Madrid and if the club hopes to make a statement that they're serious about bouncing back, your first signing being the best defender in Serie A and one of the best in the world would be quite the statement to make.
