Running the Old Trafford touchline, cupping his hands to his ears to tease Juventus fans and tauning Barcelona supporters with while pointing to the skies. Those are just three examples of the countless times Jose Mourinho has tried to get a rise out of the opposition.

Football fans sit on both sides of the fence regarding Mourinho's character. Those who love him are wowed by his confidence and larger-than-life personality.

That's the case for Vinicius Junior who endured another night of alleged racism in Real Madrid's 1-0 win over Benfica on Tuesday. The Brazilian winger scored a stunning winner and reacted to constant boos and whistles from home supporters at the Estadio da Luz.

Vinicius celebrated in typical Vini fashion and this didn't go down well with Benfica players. It was after this that a racism row marred the Champions League playoff first-leg.

Argentine winger Gianluca Prestianni pulled his shirt over his mouth and directed comments towards Vinicius. The Madrid man immediately took offense and ran to the referee and accused the player of calling him a "monkey."

A 10-minute delay took place as UEFA's racism protocol was implemented. But Prestianni was allowed to continue playing once the game resumed.

Mourinho was seen in a tense exchange with Vinicius during the aftermath of the incident. Kylian Mbappe went over and seemingly put the Portuguese coach in his place.

Some things are bigger than football and racism has no place in the game. That's why Mourinho lost the respect of Madridistas last night with his post-match comments about Vinicius.

Mourinho's shameful response

Mourinho basically suggested Vinicius caused the situation to unfold and chose not to condemn the racist abuse that he allegedly suffered. He told reporters (via Madrid Zone): "Vini Jr. provoked the fans? In how many stadiums has this happened? He’s an incredible player, I love him but when you score a goal like this, celebrate with your teammates."

Mourinho has spent years provoking fans and even opposition players. He seemingly doesn't remember poking the late former Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova in the eye.

Vinicius is well within his rights to celebrate a goal how he sees fit, that's what football is all about. Emotion which can make or break players.

The 25-year-old rose to the occasion and Prestianni crumbled and choosing to cover his face was a cowardly act. This was a stance taken by Barca legend Thierry Henry and former Manchester City defender Micah Richards.

Mourinho will go down as one of the greatest managers in football history but his tone deaf response to the racism row is pitiful. There's no way the Portuguese should be on the club's list of potential candidates to become the next permanent coach at the Bernabeu.

The 63-year-old couldn't keep his emotions in check when he was sent off later in the second half. A sore loser whose defense of Benfica not being a racist club was that their club legend is Black Portuguese icon Eusebio.
