Following the sacking of Xabi Alonso, many have been left scratching their heads as to who the next manager at the Bernabeu will be. Alonso was supposed to be the man to lead the clubs for years and years following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti but having lasted only eight months, the club are now back to hunting for their next long-term manager. The club has drawn up a long list of potential options and they have just been offered the chance to bring back one of the game's most polarizing managers.
As being reported by AS, Jose Mourinho has been offered as a managerial option for Real Madrid next season, with his agent Jorge Mendes informing Los Blancos about the managers openness to return to the Bernabeu in the summer. The report goes on to mention that his agent has made it clear that Mourinho has a release clasue in his contract, the message being if Real are looking for their next manager, the path is there for The Special One to return.
Could The Special One really return to the Bernabeu?
This update comes as the hierarchy at the club begins to seriously consider the future direction of the club. Alvaro Arbeloa was appointed as interim manager following Xabi Alonso's sacking and the cub hasn't seen much progression under Arbeloa and while he remains in charge for the rest of the season, it seems unlikely he'll return next year. The club has been assessing a number of different options with high profile names like Jurgen Klopp and Massimiliano Allegri being some of the favorites and now Mourinho has been added to that list.
Given his history with the club and his strong relationship with Florentino Perez, it makes sense why Jose has jumped up high on the clubs list. Los Blancos won three trophies under Mourinho including the 2011/12 La Liga title and the 2010/11 Copa del Rey and with Real having back-to-back trophyless seasons, bringing in an established winner like Mourinho would make sense.
One big question still remains, how would this current squad get on with Mourinho? While Jose was in charge of a Glacticos team back in the day, this is a far different kind of Galacticos team. The players in this squad somehow have bigger egos then the players from Jose's first stint and pleasing all the players has proven difficult and with Jose's reputation as one of the most polarizing managers, how he would man manage this squad would be the most difficult taks he's ever had.
Mourinho is currently in charge at Benfica where he has his side sitting second in the table despite having yet to lose a league game. His best days as a manager are no doubt behind him, but if he were given a loaded squad like the one Real Madrid has, we could see Jose bring his old days back when he was one of the best managers in the world.
