As a player and a manager, Zizou was always one for the big moments, and he has helped Real Madrid fans have a close affinity to the French national team. And after years of rumors, Zizou is finally set to officially take over his other dream job after the Real Madrid gig, usurping the highly overrated and underperforming Didier Deschamps as the new French national team coach with his pedigree of three straight Champions Leagues - and multiple La Liga titles to boot.
Karim Benzema and Zinedine Zidane shared perhaps the closest relationship of any player and coach over the last 10 years. Both men are French Algerian legends who worked together to win title after title and turn Real Madrid back into the most dominant powerhouse of European football in the last decade.
Zinedine Zidane is the biggest legend
So it is unsurprising to hear that Benzema has the kindest words for the new opportunity for Zizou with the French national team that once callously abandoned him. Benzema said French outlet Konbini, via Madrid Xtra, “Zidane being France manager? I don't know if it's him, but if it's him, yes I'm really happy. He's a legend, he's the big brother.”
Whereas Karim Benzema and Didier Deschamps never had a good relationship, Zidane and Benzie were the closest. Benzema was a Champions League legend and an even bigger monster under Zidane, just like so many other players for Real Madrid.
So Real Madrid fans are ecstatic to see how he can raise the games of other Real Madrid players who will be working with him for France, especially the mercurial Kylian Mbappe who has all the talent in the world but seems to miss out on being the real winner he needs to be. But with Zidane and Jose Mourinho now coaching him from both sides, it can only get better.
There are other French internationals, too, who still need to reach their best level and can benefit a lot from Zizou, like Ibrahima Konate and Aurelien Tchouameni. And then there is Michael Olise, whose interest in Real Madrid can be further kindled by being managed by this absolute legend of the game.
