Luke Modrić is set to miss the Supercopa semifinal due to a viral infection, Real Madrid confirmed in an official communication this morning.
Tonight, Real Madrid are involved in the semifinal of the Supercopa. They come up against Mallorca and the winner of the match will face Barcelona in the final on Sunday.
It goes without saying that Real Madrid want to win every trophy in sight. It is especially the case under Carlo Ancelotti that they are hungry for trophies, both in Spain and in Europe too.
Clasico rivals Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao yesterday, so they have cemented their place in the final on Sunday. Real Madrid, along with the rest of the world, hope to make it a Clasico final.
Luka Modrić set to miss Real Madrid vs Mallorca through infection
Unfortunately, Luka Modrić will miss the match tonight against Mallorca. This is because of a viral infection which has impacted him, rendering him unable to play in the semifinal. However, the club will monitor his progress, in the hopes of having him available for the potential weekend fixture.
Real Madrid's club statement said: “Our player Luka Modrić will be out for today’s match against RCD Mallorca due to a viral infection. His progress is pending.”
Without a doubt, this is a big blow to Real Madrid. Luka Modrić is the most experienced player at the club, so his presence in big occasions is always felt. Unfortunately, so too is his absence.
Undoubtedly, Real Madrid have the resources to cope with Modrić's absence in this match. They have a talented bunch of midfielders, who Ancelotti may or may not wish to rotate. However, the psychological blow of missing Modrić might be felt.
Hopefully, Modrić gets better soon - From Real Madrid's perspective, they will hope that the Croatian midfielder is better for this weekend.
