Real Madrid starting right back Trent Alexander-Arnold has started to pay dividends for the Merengues these last few weeks after signing a big contract last year to join the biggest club in the world after being a Champions League winner and legend for Liverpool.

Trent's improvement in form and ability to dethrone Madrid legend Dani Carvajal, who just gave his offiical farewell to the fans on Matchday 38 against Athletic Club, did not yield a spot in the World Cup squad. As Thomas Tuchel had threatened all along, Trent was offiically left off the squad, and it isn't just the Real Madrid faithful who are baffled by their old Champions League enemy's decision.

Iconic English right back Kyle Walker had strong thoughts about the snub, and he cannot fathom, either, how the starting right back of Real Madrid was not named to the England national team squad. He's never going to call out a Tottenham Hotspur player as an icon of that club, too, but Djed Spence being in over Trent seems quite blasphemous, especially since Spence is a backup for a Spurs side that is at risk of relegation from the Premier League.

Thomas Tuchel has his own ideas

Walker said of Tuchel's decision in an interview with talkSPORT, “A Real Madrid player not getting into England is crazy. We all talk about what Trent doesn't do so well. How about we talk about what he does well. He’s probably the best RB in the world when it comes to passing, delivering balls, getting assists, and then his big game catalogue.”

Real Madrid fans are indeed nodding along, because, yes, Kyle Walker, it is crazy that Trent Alexander-Arnold did not make the England squad for all that he has in his locker technically and for how he has worked his way into being an asset in the Real Madrid starting lineup, which is not easy to do.

Trent officially finished the 2025/26 season with five assists for the Royal White club, but if you ask Madridistas, they will feel he merited triple those assists. It's just that his teammates, particularly the grossly inefficient Kylian Mbappe up top, wasted a lot of those golden opportunities from crosses and set pieces.

Even if Tuchel has his own ideas of football, which is entirely respectable, not even having Trent as an option in the squad is a wild opinion bordering on insanity. If legends of English football like Wayne Rooney and Walker are baffled, then it goes to show how controversial of a call it is.
