Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappé was 28 points away from winning the Ballon d'Or this year, according to L'Equipe. Harry Kane finished on 1,055 points, and Mbappé was on 1,027 points, meaning the Frenchman was only 28 points away from winning the whole thing.

It is a very heartbreaking situation for Mbappé to be losing an award he has chased all his life by the smallest of margins. Obviously, Harry Kane also had an incredible season and probably deserved the Ballon d'Or over the Frenchman because of the goals he scored, the way he impacted his team's performance, and the titles he won as well.

Hopefully, this motivates Kylian Mbappe to do even better this season

That is not to say Mbappé was not within his rights to be a top three player or even be close to winning, but the result will obviously hurt him either way. As I've mentioned before in my articles, Mbappé would rather want to win the Ballon d'Or when he fully deserves to win the Ballon d'Or than win it and have an asterisk with his name because people feel he doesn't deserve it.

There is an argument to be made that he wouldn't care about it, but deep down, he probably would think about that. He would want his first Ballon d'Or victory to be when he truly deserves it, whether he would like to admit it or not.

However, losing this way is simply disgusting. Being 28 points away from victory is completely heartbreaking, considering he was left out of the top 10 by three different journalists, which could have given him around 30 points. In that sense, it is truly mind-boggling that Mbappé did not even get those 30 points because he obviously deserved to have that.

It is a very similar situation in terms of points to how Vinícius Junior lost to Rodri a couple of years ago. Vinicius Junior was a handful of points away from victory, but he was also excluded from the top 10 by three journalists, which ultimately contributed to him losing the Ballon d'Or to the Spanish midfielder. Mbappé has had the same thing. The only difference is that Vinícius Junior probably deserved that Ballon d'Or more than Mbappé deserves this one.

Be that as it may, it is truly heartbreaking to lose in such fashion, and hopefully this is something that drives him towards victory and drives him towards greatness even more from now on.
