Real Madrid suffered a nightmare 4-2 loss to Benfica on Wednesday night and finished outside the top eight of the Champions League table. It means Alvaro Arbeloa's side will have to via the playoffs against the Portuguese club or Bodo/Glimt.
Kylian Mbappe bagged a brace at the Estadio da Luz and was one of few players who could hold their head up high. The French forward's two goals weren't enough as the hosts stunned Los Blancos in a dram-filled clash in Portugal.
It was a dissapointing night for Madrid who deserved to lose against Jose Mourinho's side. Mbappe spoke honestly after the game and made clear he isn't impressed with his teammates' mentality.
Mbappe puts Real Madrid teammates on notice
Mbappe spoke like a leader and explained why Madrid were rightly beaten by Benfica. He said (via Madrid Zone):
"It's not about tactics, it's not about us lacking quality, it's about playing with more desire to win than your opponent. Benfica were playing for their lives, and we were not. That's it, that's why we lost. Benfica fought hard to win, and we didn't."

Mbappe's comments highlight a clear lack of desire from this Madrid side who boast some of the best players in the world. It also suggests he sees a clear issue in the squad regarding his teammates' mindsets.
The 27-year-old has been faultless this season and his brace took him up to 13 goals in seven Champions League games. That's a record for the group stages of the competition but wasn't rewarded with automatic progress to the last 16.
Mbappe 'tired' of teammates
Mbappe's frustrations were on display during his post-match interview and it seems he is starting to lose patience with his teammates. He is reportedly "getting very tired of the irresponsible attitude of his teammates this season", per ABC.es (via Madrid Universal).
The Frenchman has been at the Estadio Bernabeu since the summer of 2024 when he arrived as a free agent after leaving Paris Saint-Germain. He experienced the dressing room during Carlo Ancelotti's last season in charge.
Ancelotti often protected his players and that created a positive enviorment that allowed the team to thrive. But with the Italian coach gone big egos are taking hold this season and that now includes under Arbeloa.
There's an argument to be had that player power was the main reason Xabi Alonso was dismissed earlier this month. But Mbappe held a good relationship with Alonso and he might just be starting to see the problems his colleagues are creating due to their attitudes.
