Real Madrid completely humiliated themselves (again) against Barcelona. However, Kylian Mbappe was the best of an awful bunch in El Clasico.
Within the space of only a few days, Real Madrid beat Mallorca to reach the Supercopa final, yet in the final, they were humiliated against Barcelona for the second time this season.
Despite Kylian Mbappe opening the scoring, it seems like a distant memory for Real Madrid fans now. By the end of the match, they were wishing for it to be over already and ultimately, they came out of it losing 2-5.
Real Madrid then collected their runner-up medals. It is fair to say that this isn't a feeling which comes customary to Real Madrid players, so it was a hard watch for fans.
Yet, it was completely deserved. Real Madrid were awful last night and they deserved nothing less than a loss. In fact, the humiliating scoreline was quite fitting for all but one player.
Kylian Mbappe was a lion in a herd of donkeys during Real Madrid 2-5 Barcelona
Kylian Mbappe appears to finally be back to his best. He was the one player who showed up for Real Madrid last night and if every Real Madrid player was on his level, we would have won El Clasico.
Unfortunately, though, no other player was on Mbappe's level. He was a lion among a herd of donkeys and his individual performance was not enough to counteract the team performance shown by Barcelona.
Now, Carlo Ancelotti's players must hold their hands in the air. They let Mbappe and the global fanbase down last night and hopefully, collecting their runner-up medals would have been a harsh but necessary reality check that they must do better this season.
As it stands, Los Blancos are not in a bad position. So, this reality check could not come at a better time. If the mentality is kept intact at Real Madrid, then they must strive to make it up to the fans this season and finish in a better spot than Barcelona.
La Liga is certainly within Real's grasp. They are not out of the Champions League either, so they *could* repeat their successes from last season. However, it will not happen with performances like last night.
Hopefully, Kylian Mbappe returning back to his best and flying with confidence will have a snowball effect on his teammates. It can be said with certainty that they need to take a leaf from his performance last night.
