This summer Real Madrid will have to make one of the biggest decisions in the recent history of the club, who will they hire to be their new full-time manager. Following Xabi Alonso's sacking the club brought in Alvaro Arbeloa to finish out the season as the draw up a list of candidate to assess in the summer. The list is full of some of the biggest managers in the world, one of which Kylian Mbappe is very familiar with, one he won't be too eager to reunite with.
As being reported by GOAL.com, current Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has emerged as a potential candidate to be Real Madrid's new manager next season, with club president Florentino Perez being a big fan of the 54-year-old tactician. Emery joins a list headlined by Jose Mourinho as the club continues their search for the man to bring the club back to the top following disastrous back-to-back trophyless seasons.
A ghost from Kylian Mbappe's past could be on the way to the Bernabeu
The Frenchman and the Spaniard know each other well from Mbappe's first season with PSG and despite some decent numbers, tension between Mbappe, Neymar, and Unai Emery ultimately led to the manager being sacked in the summer of 2018. Mbappe spent one season playing under Unai Emery in 2017/18 bagging 21 goals and 16 assists in 44 appearance in all competitions, the season where he established himself as one of the best players in the world.
Following his departure from PSG, Emery spent time managing Arsenal and Villareal, winning a Europa League with the Spanish side, but he has arguably impressed most during his time at Aston Villa in the Premier League. Villa brought in Emery in 2022 and he quickly turned a relegation battling Villa into a consistent top five Premier League side, stamping his claim as one of the top managers in the Premier League.
His impressive work has caught the eye of Florentino Perez with the manager now joining the list of manager candidates with other names like Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp, and Massimiliano Allegri also being strongly considered this summer. Emery's stock has never been higher, putting him in prime position for a move to a top European club with Real Madrid being the club most interested in the Spaniard.
The question still remains, would it be the right hire? If Mbappe and Emery couldn't work at PSG when Mbappe was still a teenager, why would things be different now that he's a more established player with an even bigger ego? Xabi Alonso's downfall came following a fallout with the dressing room and given Emery's strong disipline, he may be even less liked by the stars in the dressing room, which would set him up for failure before he could even get started.
