Kylian Mbappe came to Real Madrid in search of glory, thinking that the brand of the club would catapult him to Ballons d'Or and Champions League titles galore. Instead, PSG won the Champions League in his first season at Real Madrid with Ousmane Dembele capturing his first career Ballon d'Or over Barcelona phenom Lamine Yamal. And now this season, Real Madrid are again without any trophies while PSG are back in the Champions League Final.
Real Madrid fans were none the wiser last season with Mbappe racking up goals against lower level competition en route to a European Golden Shoe and a record over idol Cristiano Ronaldo, but the 2025/26 season has exposed the depravity of his self centered goals as Real lose while only Mbappe, at least in his own mind, wins.
But the wider footballing world is already seeing past Mbappe. Just as Dembele took the mantle from Mbappe as the best French player last season, another great winger has risen up to do the same.
Olise has pulled clear of Mbappe
Michael Olise formally outclassed Kylian Mbappe through two legs between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, eliminating the Merengues. Olise cooked Alvaro Carreras in the first leg before dispatching the final goal on Ferland Mendy in the second, while Mbappe wasted several chances and scored an easy goal while doing nothing in terms of all around play.
Whereas Real Madrid have been a disappointment under Mbappe, Olise has been a Ballon d'Or contender alongside Harry Kane. And to make it official, the UNFP gave Olise the award over Mbappe as the best French Player Abroad for the 2025/26 season.
it is a deserved win for Michael Olise, and while Real Madrid fans are loathe to admit that a European rival's star player is better than theirs, they will readily admit that is the case for the former Crystal Palace man, especially after he so thoroughly cooked their wing in the Champions League.
The passing, work rate, and progression Olise shows far outpace that of Mbappe, who cannot even play his striker position to an adequate level positionally, as legends like Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo have readily pointed out for more than a year now.
Mbappe needs to be taking snubs like this as motivation that he needs to do better if he wants to be a star at Real Madrid and properly follow in Cristiano's footsteps. Instead, he continues to shirk back and act smaller than the status of a Madrid striker.
