Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa has done a good job of navigating choppy waters since the dismissal of his predecessor and former teammate Xabi Alonso, who actually had a pretty solid winning rate since his hiring from Bayer Leverkusen.
But Alonso lost the locker room, specifically superstars like Vinicius Junior and Fede Valverde who were center piece of multiple Champions League winning squads. And though Arbeloa could not overcome the odds to win any trophies for Real Madrid this season, he did reunite the divided locker room.
According to reporting from insider Jorge C. Picon, there are actually members of the Real Madrid board who believe the club should continue with Arbeloa as their manager. The problem is that president Florentino Perez wants to fire Arbeloa, and he is the one pushing the hardest for Arbeloa to go. And obviously, Perez is the one who has the final say, ruling with an iron fist.
Florentino Perez gets his way
If Florentino is dead set on wanting Alvaro Arbeloa out of the club, then there is pretty much nothing he can do to convince the presi to change his mind. We all know how stubborn and set in his ways Florentino is, and any experienced Madridista will tell you how much he prefers to make a splash. Honestly, even Xabi Alonso was not as established as the managers Flo usually goes for, but because he was a great player at the club and did huge things for Leverkusen in going undefeated to dethrone Bayern Munich, he made an exception.
But the Jose Mourinhos and Jurgen Klopps, those are the guys Florentino Perez wants. Former right back Arbeloa with no trophies? Well, no matter how much the locker room may be openly pining for him to stay or how many people in the board room next to Perez want the continuity and a chance at a full season for the Spaniard, Arbeloa does not really stand a chance under these circumstances.
Because Florentino gets what he wants, for better or for worse. It is his show, and he is almost as good as a dictator these days, such is his clout at Real Madrid with how many Champions League trophies he has brought in during his second stint. So if his desire is to swiftly kick Arbeloa to the curb, then, well, the manager search will continue to heat up long before Arbeloa is formally fired when the 2025/26 season ends.
