This season we have seen a number of Real Madrid legends speak up and let their opinions be know about the state of the club in recent years. It's about time we see legends call out both the players and the hierarchy for the part they play in the current state of the club. While speaking with Marca, Luis Figo has said what many fans have been saying in regards to Xabi Alonso and the treatment he received from the club during his time in charge. Figo went on to say:
"The reality is that it is a bad season. For Real Madrid, if you don’t win, it’s always a negative season. When the titles are missing, it’s because things didn’t work. I don’t think he (Alonso) was given enough time. We did not even have time to make an analysis of the months he has been there. It’s very complicated."Luis Figo
Luis Figo finally says the quiet part out loud about Xabi Alonso
The Portuguese icon is spot on. Xabi Alonso was signed in May of 2025 and sacked in January 2026, he was brought in to bring change to the club and usher in a new era at the Bernabeu, and you only give him eight months and don't fully back his ideas before you decide to sack him? In what universe in that enough time to bring a culture change to a club, it's about time someone like Figo comes out and says it and it's the mindset many fans have held since Alonso got sacked.
In his eight months in charge Alonso had started to bring about the change fans were expecting and everything was trending upwards until the moment it all came crumbling down, and we all know what moment that is. Real Madrid were seven points clear at the top of La Liga after their El Clasico win in October and sitting second in the Champions League until Vinicius Jr threw a temper tantrum direct at Alonso and that spelled the beginning of the end for the manager. After that moment the club and players, aside from a select few, lost faith in the manager which ultimately led to his demise.
Figo's sentiment is shared amongst fans and from what we have seen following the sacking of Xabi Alonso, it's clear the Spaniard wasn't the biggest issues at the club. The team has gotten worse under Alvaro Arbeloa, now sitting nine points behind first place Barcelona, are out of the Champions League and got eliminated from the Copa del Rey by Segunda Division side Albacete, but hey it was Xabi Alonso's fault right?
It would be the club and the players best interest to listen to what these legends have to say cause odds are they're right more often then they're wrong. Real Madrid have a huge summer ahead of them, one that will define the club for years and years to come. They have to insure they sign the right manager to avoid another situation like we saw this year, and avoid setting the club back even further than the decision to sack Xabi Alonso did.
