Rodri has fueled the flames over a possible move to Real Madrid this summer amid speculation over his future at Manchester City. The Spaniard is reportedly on Los Blancos' shortlist as they look to sign a new midfielder.
The 29-year-old has started to return to his best recently after putting injury troubles behind him. He will be in action against Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday (March 11th).
Florentino Perez might have an eye on Rodri when the two sides clash at the Santiago Bernabeu. He is one of Europe's best holding midfielders and could be a signing that helps whoever is in charge next season guide the team back to the top of European football.
There were recent reports suggesting Madrid had distanced themselves from moving for Rodri. They were said to be exploring other targets such as PSG's Vitinha and AZ Alkmaar's Kees Smit.
Rodri talked up Madrid move
Los Blancos are long-term admirers of Rodri and have had an eye on him in recent years. He's made 24 appearances across competitions this season, posting two goals.
Talk of him potentially joining the Spanish heavyweights has intensified after previous comments surfaced online.
Rodri told Esquire back in 2024 (via ESPN):
"Well Madrid's my home. I'd never discard anything."
The Spaniard netted the winner against Inter Milan in the final of the 2023 Champions League, the Cityzens in their first-ever European title triumph.
Madrid told Rodri is 'best in his position'
Rodri has been the man for the big occasion throughout his time with Guardiola's side. His recent return to form bodes well for Los Blancos if they do intend to pursue the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner.
Guardiola waxed lyrical earlier this season and made a bold claim about the player's status in world football. He said (via the club's website):
“He changed the game. He proved in 45 minutes that he is the best in his position,”
Rodri would be a sensational signing for Madrid given his experience, leadership qualities and world-class ability. He is the right profile to slot into the midfield under a potential new manager and help the younger midfielders such as Thiago Pitarch grow.
That said, his best days are arguably behind him and paying a big fee for a player with a year left on their contract can be a risk. But he knows Spanish football and could turn the tide.
