Real Madrid spent a whopping 60 million euros to sign Marc Cucurella from Chelsea this summer transfer window, but not but a month later, their investment is starting to look like an absolute bargain deal for the Royal Whites.
Cucurella is a great defensive left back, and after this World Cup, he has to be known as the best in the world at his job. Game after game, Cucurella has totally shut down his flank, reminding Spanish fans of what Sergio Ramos did for the country on the right hand side at the 2010 World Cup.
Pedro Porro and Cucurella are giving Spain an advantage beyond words, and while it was Porro's turn to take home Man of the Match honors and much of the praise after scoring in a shutdown 2-0 win over France to back up what they did at the 2024 European Championships before winning the tournament over England, Cucurella was also incredible.
Marc Cucurella will be worth every penny
The former Brighton, Getafe, and Barcelona man won nearly five tackles and had a goal saving tackle, completely taking Ousmane Dembele and even Michael Olise out of the game. Jose Mourinho wanted Cucurella and only Cucurella at left back, discarding all other options and telling Florentino Perez to pay whatever it took to sign Cucurella, no exceptions, because he is essential to what he wants to do at Real Madrid.
If Mourinho's love for the Euro 2024 hero was met with skepticism, then his already undying love for Real Madrid combined with his insane defensive performances at the 2026 World Cup on the left flank have erased all doubts.
Once again, Jose Mourinho looks like a mad genius for cluing in on Marc Cucurella and qualities he brings, and by shining in the World Cup semifinal in a 2-0 win over the tournament favorites and the most stacked individual set of attackers in world football for France, Cucurella has unequivocally slotted himself near the top of the best fullbacks on the planet.
Real Madrid need a character and a defender like this at left back to support Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior in 2026/27, and Mourinho knew that when he sanctioned the Spanish international's blockbuster 60 million euro signing. No player has cost Real Madrid close to that much this summer transfer window, and no Madridista will complain about the cost of the deal after watching what Cucurella has done for Spain in these big games at the World Cup.
