Marc Cucurella said what nobody expected about his Spanish national team future

The Spanish national team is on the verge of going back to back with the European Championship and World Cup again, as they took down France in the semifinals and England in the Final in 2024 and now have only Argentina standing in their way to win their first World Cup since 2010 after flat out dominating France in this year's semifinal.

Real Madrid left back Marc Cucurella, who became Real's only representative on La Roja after his summer signing from Chelsea, was one of the biggest reasons why Spain dominated France. As teammate Fabian Ruiz and others in the media put it, Cucurella had Real Madrid dream transfer target Michael Olise in his pocket throughout the match.

Cucurella has become a hero for the Spanish national team since Euro 2024, working hard on the left flank while providing the sort of dominant defense Spain has not seen from a fullback since Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos at right back in 2010.

Is Cucurella planning an early retirement?

But surprisingly, Cucurella may already be thinking about retirement from Spanish football. His comment about getting manager Luis de la Fuente tattooed on his face if Spain win the World Cup this year already turned plenty of heads and was probably a joke, but he made another comment that is usually not something people joke about.

As relayed by Madrid Xtra, Marc Cucurella said that he will tell De la Fuente if Spain win the World Cup that he retiring from national team duty, “If I win the World Cup, I'll call Luis the next day, tell him I'm retiring from the national team.”

Cucurella is in the prime of his career at 27, so it would be wild for him to retire now when so many players have been going at it for their national teams into their 40s like Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo.

You would think that Cucurella would have two more World Cups left in him for Spain as they look to build a second dynasty in the 2000s, but maybe he wants to settle down in the summers with his family and focus 100 percent on Real Madrid.

With the bad blood between Madrid and the Spanish national team over the years, Madridistas would honestly love for Cucurella to get his ring (they are giving those out now, by the way) and call it quits for Spain so that he can focus on staying healthy for Los Blancos.
