New Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho was very successful in getting president Florentino Perez to sign a multitude of star players he needed to beef up the spine of the team. Almost immediately after the summer 2026 transfer window opened, Real signed Denzel Dumfries, Bernardo Silva, Marc Cucurella, and free agent Ibrahima Konate for the legendary Portuguese manager.
But while Florentino Perez is dreaming of right winger Michael Olise and surprisingly making serious inroads to signing the Bayern Munich superstar, the well has seemingly run dry. Real Madrid have not signed anyone else, including the additional midfielder and center backs that Mourinho was asking for.
According to a report from MARCA, via Madrid Xtra, Jose Mourinho still wants Real Madrid to sign another center back and center midfielder for the Royal Whites this summer. However, it is impossible for Real to make those signings for the manager, because they have too many players in those positions. They will need to make a sale.
Jose Mourinho may have unfulfilled dreams
There are a couple of players blocking those moves for Mourinho. Eduardo Camavinga has not been told he is safe by Mou, unlike Aurelien Tchouameni who signed a contract extension through 2030/31 despite rampant rumors prior, but he is maintaining that he will stay to prove himself no matter what. And even center back Raul Asencio, whom Mou has already told he wants to discard this summer, is maintaining the same thing.
Real Madrid are going to have trouble selling players who do not want to leave, which was the case in the past even with worse players like Jesus Vallejo, Mariano Diaz, and Dani Ceballos. So Mourinho is starting to realize one of the tough things about Real Madrid which is the logistics and the fact that once a player has a good contract at the biggest club in the world, they tend to not want to leave.
Unless if Camavinga or Asencio changes their minds, Mourinho is probably going to be stuck with what he has. The dream signings are likely not going to happen for him, especially if they are expensive additions like Enzo Fernandez for up to 150 million euros from Chelsea or Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan, who himself could exceed 80 million euros in total fees.
Mourinho is right that he still needs one better center back and midfielder, but, realistically, he's probably not going to get either this summer.
