If you polled a group of Real Madrid fans to ask who the most beloved player on the team is that everyone likes and is not part of any of the controversy or "stan wars", then the name of young attacking midfielder Arda Guler would come up first alongside veterans like Thibaut Courtois.
Guler has been getting better and better ever year since Real Madrid signed him from the Turkish league, stealing the wizardly left footed prospect from under the noses of arch rivals Barcelona. He is already the best pure playmaker in La Liga, building a connection with Kylian Mbappe that already has Real Madrid fans hoping for a Mesut Ozil and Cristiano Ronaldo pairing 2.0, especially with Jose Mourinho ready to hand the playmaking keys to Arda.
Even though Guler is coming off a tough World Cup in which Turkey were shockingly eliminated in the group stages and struggled against clearly inferior opponents Australia and Paraguay, nobody in the building at the Valdebebas doubts Guler at all - and those outside the building with Madrid ties are also high on him.
Arda Guler is still a premier gem
Marco Asensio played for years at Real Madrid and was a great gem for the club before his tragic ACL tear, and he is now closing out his career in the Turkish league. The cameras at TRT Spor caught up with Asensio and asked him about the new left footed attacking midfielder at the Santiago Bernabeu, and Asensio could not have been more full of praise for the 21 year old magician.
The Mallorca native said of Arda Guler, via Madrid Xtra, “Arda Güler is a very talented player. Last season, he had more continuity to be able to show his talent. If he combines his talent with hard work, he will have a very successful career.”
From the moment he arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu, Guler has been nothing but the epitome of hard work, even putting on a few kilos of muscle mass because he was criticized for being too skinny and had trouble in practice keeping up with the big boys on the roster.
Guler is an accountable player who learns from his defeats, focuses on how he can help the team, and never stops trying to get even better technically and try new things. Asensio is spot on about Guler and knows what it takes to be a top player at Real Madrid, and he knows Guler can be that guy. And Madridistas will whisper that Guler has what it takes to outplay Asensio's career, too.
