Nico Paz was incredible against Manchester United in the Champions League on Wednesday night, beating the Red Devils 4-1 at home. Almost everything that Como did went through Paz on the night. He scored two brilliant goals and also provided an assist before getting a standing ovation from the crowd when he was subbed off.
Paz is easily the best academy product that Real Madrid have produced in the last few years. Every passing day, it is becoming more and more apparent. Obviously, this is not even the prime of the Argentine, because he is still in his early 20s, and it looks like he's improving every single season.
Nico Paz's physical profile is too good to ignore
Every time he steps on the pitch, it just seems like he is showing exactly what Real Madrid are missing out on and how they have made a mistake in letting this player go. This season, for club and country, Paz has scored six goals and assisted five more in three different competitions. He is ridiculously calm on the ball and rarely gives it away. His defensive work rate is higher than most attacking midfielders in Europe, and he plays the game with such maturity that it is hard to comprehend that he is still only 22 years old.
Obviously, with Real Madrid, there were different things to deal with in this regard, but if you look at it at face value, it seems like, in every single match, Paz is making Real Madrid look silly for letting him go. They had such a brilliant player in their squad, and yet they felt the need to go and sign another great talent, Arda Guler. Obviously, both of these players are now showing their quality, and they are two of the best young players in the world at the moment.
However, Paz’s physicality and defensive work rate might just give him an edge over Guler, who, although playing unbelievable football at the moment, is still never going to reach the physical dominance that Paz can reach, simply because of the difference in their physiology – which is not something Guler can control.
Obviously, Jude Bellingham’s place in the squad is also worth noting. If it were just Paz and Guler in the attacking midfield position, Real Madrid would have kept Paz in the squad without a shadow of a doubt, or at least brought him back after a couple of years at Como. With Bellingham in the picture, things become trickier, and it explains why Real Madrid did not bring him back. Still, Paz’s performances are too good, and they make you wonder whether it would’ve been better to have him as an option at Real Madrid.
