Real Madrid youngster Nico Paz had a season for the ages in Serie A, leading Como to a historic Champions League bid while performing as one of the top five best players in the entire continent. Paz was Cesc Fabregas's muse on the pitch, executing his tactical ideas to perfection and showing the sort of leadership that legendary Real Madrid midfielders like Redondo, Toni Kroos, and Luka Modric would approve of.
Many want to see Paz back at the Santiago Bernabeu this summer transfer window, as Real Madrid can buy the world-class center midfielder back for a meager nine million euros after he was the best player in Serie A in the same season that Federico Dimarco had 17 assists (among all the other wonderful players for champions Inter Milan).
But the way Paz carried Como was special. He had very underrated teamates who also had great years, but there was no mistaking that Paz was on another level with his intelligence, goals, creativity, ability to take defenders on, carrying in transition, and even world-class defensive work to recover the ball.
Nico Paz can make his choice
While Jose Mourinho and the Real Madrid faithful want the World Cup bound Nico Paz back immediately, Como are working hard to keep Paz in the north of Italy for one more season. According to a report from transfer insider Gianluca Di Marzio, via Madrid Xtra, Como are insisting more forcefully that Paz stay with them for another year of seasoning. Their entire plan to keep Paz relies upon the player himself pushing Real Madrid to let him enjoy his football and the Champions League with less pressure before going to the Santiago Bernabeu.
Even though Real Madrid could use the Argentinian international, there is merit to the argument that Paz would benefit from another year at Como and that a year of Como with the Champions League is a different year entirely, too. Plus, Real Madrid suffer no big loss, they can still buy the player back in 2027 for a mere 10 million euros.
Paz has more power than Real Madrid in this case. Real Madrid can want him back and hold the cards, but the ethos of this club is to respect the players. If Paz wants to stay with Como and can convince Real Madrid of the admitted merits to that decision, then Como can get their wish. And for those wondering about Inter Milan, that is simply not happening.
