Ever since Toni Kroos hung up his boots, Real Madrid have felt the void he left behind, and they’ve yet to fill it. A lot of names have come and gone, but none have satisfied Madrid. Toni Kroos was cut from a different cloth, and they don’t make players like that anymore.
One of the major names that started to surface lately was Rodri from Manchester City, who won the Ballon d’Or ahead of Vinicius Jr. Fans carry some hostility towards him, especially after the infamous banner displayed by Manchester City fans at the Etihad, but one must appreciate the quality the Spaniard possesses.
Real Madrid were said to be exploring the possibility of signing Rodri as a replacement for Toni Kroos, but Fabrizio Romano, via his YouTube channel, has dismissed any such talks or even the possibility of Los Blancos signing Rodri this summer.
Fabrizio Romano shuts down Real Madrid push for Toni Kroos replacement
Romano said, “For this summer, there is nothing happening for Rodri,” in reference to the rumors linking Madrid and the midfielder. “Rodri is staying at Manchester City. Then in the next months, it’s going to be time to decide on a new contract [with Manchester City].”
So that’s that. Madrid are not signing Rodri, at least not this summer. And let me offer my two cents: Madrid do not need the midfielder in the future either.
Rodri is 29 now. If Madrid sign him next summer, he will be 30. If they wait until his contract expires, he’ll be 31. Signing a “replacement” player at that age is a gamble leaning heavily toward a loss.
Rather, younger replacement options must be explored for a long-term solution. Rodri is exceptional, but he will likely remain at the top of his game for only 3 to 4 seasons after any potential signing, and that’s assuming no decline in quality with age.
If a Toni Kroos replacement is to come, I suggest the search start within the academy. Xabi Alonso values La Fabrica, and he and his team are capable of identifying future stars. If not, then a younger external signing must be preferred.
