Real Madrid went into the summer transfer window planning a major squad overhaul and so far they are delivering on their promise. The announcements of Ibrahima Konate, Marc Cucurella, Denzel Dumfries, and Bernardo Silva have changed the complexion of the squad, with all of the new signings expected to have a major role in Jose Mourinho's team. However, one of the new summer signings may have already lost his place in the starting lineup without even kicking a ball for Los Blancos.

As being reported by MadridXtra on X, Jose Mourinho views Bernardo Silva as a key player in his 4-2-3-1 system he plans to use this season, however his starting spot is now in doubt following a poor performance by the Portuguese international at the World Cup. Bernardo now faces an uphill battle to win over Mourinho and get into the starting lineup after a number of solid World Cup performances from other Real Madrid midfielders this summer.

Bernardo goes from key player to bench player in the blink of an eye

It's safe to say the signing of Bernardo Silva was definitely one fans didn't see coming and one that still has some scratching their heads. The Portuguese established himself as somewhat of an under the radar legend at Manchester City, making 460 appearances and winning every trophy imaginable during his time at the Etihad. Real Madrid are bringing in the 31-year-old as a free agent with Mourinho said to be a fan of the player, but is he really what the club needs right now?

All the talk this summer had been about Real Madrid signing a midfielder like Enzo Fernandez, all to end up with Bernardo Silva, and after his World Cup campaign, the move looks that much more confusing. He played just 94 minutes across Portugal's five matches, failing to make any impact, with his only stats being two yellow cards. Mourinho reportedly viewed Bernardo as a key player in his midfield but now that has all changed after his lack luster summer.

Mourinho is expected to build his midfield around Jude Bellingham, who is having one of the best World Cup campaigns we have ever seen from a midfielder, as well as a strong showing from Aurelien Tchouameni, leaving only one place left in the starting lineup for another midfielder, a place Bernardo will have to do his best to convince the manager he deserves.

The veteran faces competition from players like Fede Valverde and Arda Guler for the position, so he will have to do his best this pre-season to show he still have what it takes to be a starter and a difference maker at this stage in his career.
