Over the last few years, Real Madrid have been assembling a formidable squad that is expected to lead the club to copious amounts of success in the years to come. Many of the older veteran players are on their way out of the club, with new younger players coming in to fill their place.

When you look at the squad on paper it is arguably the best squad in all of world football. It is filled with world class talent from front to back in almost every position, truly an embarrassment of riches.

However, one are of the squad is still too weak for new manager Xabi Alonso's liking, left-back. Both Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia are not the type of fullback Alonso needs to play and has asked the club to scout the market for their left-back of the future.

The name that has been most linked with Real Madrid is Benfica left-back and former academy product Alvaro Carreras, it was believed a deal was close to being done, however that has now changed and the club are looking at other fullback options for Alonso's squad.

Real Madrid target Bayer Leverkusen cornerstone to reunite with Xabi Alonso

As being reported by GOAL, with talks for Benfica left-back Alvaro Carreras stalling, Real Madrid could turn their attention to Bayer Leverkusen's Alejandro Grimaldo, who is eager to reunite with his former coach.

With Benfica holding firm on their €50 million value for Carreras, Real Madrid have started to asses other left-back options for Xabi Alonso and they have not ruled out bringing Grimaldo back to Spain and reuniting the player with his former Leverkusen coach.

Grimaldo is a former La Masia product, which could rub some Real Madrid fans the wrong way, however that should not take away from the fact that he was one of Alonso's key players in Leverkusen's invincible season in 24/25 and would make a fantastic signing for Real Madrid.

When it comes to which fullback to sign there are a number of differences between the two that could factor into who the club signs. The major difference is age, Carreras is only 22-years-old and had a lot of potential ahead of him, whereas Grimaldo is 29-years-old but has much more experience at the top level.
