Real Madrid made a very interesting decision recently, handing Carlo Ancelotti a contract extension until the summer of 2026. Initially, the expectation was that the Italian would leave the club at the end of this season, when his deal ran out. He was being heavily linked with the Brazil national team job as well but has ended up remaining at Santiago Bernabeu for the foreseeable future.

Real Madrid were being linked with a number of managers as well. And most viewed Xabi Alonso as the favourite to replace Ancelotti.

Alonso has arguably been Europe's best manager this season, as Bayer Leverkusen are yet to lost a game and sit atop the Bundesliga table. When the Spaniard had been appointed a little over a year ago, they were a team trying to avoid relegation.

Unsurprisingly, he has earned a lot of plaudits for the job he has done at Bayer Leverkusen so far. Real Madrid and Liverpool are the two clubs to be most heavily linked with Alonso in recent months. Now, it looks like another one of his former sides want to bring him back.

As reported by Relevo, the leaders of Bayern Munich are amazed by what Alonso is achieving at Bayer Leverkusen. They want to give him the keys to the Allianz bench when Thomas Tuchel's time comes to an end.

Tuchel's own future at Bayern Munich is in serious doubt. They won the Bundesliga last season because of Borussia Dortmund's slip on the final matchday. This time around, despite Harry Kane's record-breaking form, they sit four points behind Bayer Leverkusen.

Alonso is the type of manager who could make his pick next summer. Liverpool and Bayern Munich are being linked with him. But the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and more could end up in the race for the Spaniard too.
