Real Madrid were not expected to make any additions in the January transfer window, as has been the case in recent years. Plans might have changed though after David Alaba tore his ACL in a recent game against Villarreal. Not only has the Austrian been ruled out for the rest of the season but he won't take part in EURO 2024 either.

We can only wish Alaba the best of luck in his recovery. Hopefully, he returns to full fitness and is back on the pitch next season.

For the time being, Real Madrid only have two fit centre-backs in their squad, Antonio Rudiger and Nacho Fernandez. Aurelien Tchouameni can fill in if the situation calls for it but that would not be ideal, especially in important games.

So, it would make sense for Real Madrid to sign another centre-back in January. One of the most interested names to be linked with the club is that of Raphael Varane, who left for Manchester United in the summer of 2021 but his future at Old Trafford is in doubt.

As reported by AS, Varane's name has not yet been officially put on the table in the Valdebebas offices. Ancelotti welcomes the Frenchman's incorporation if Real Madrid decides to take the step to talk to Manchester United.

In the current circumstances, signing Varane on loan, similar to summer deals for Kepa Arrizabalaga and Joselu, would make the most sense for Real Madrid. Despite his legendary status at the club, bringing him back on a permanent basis might not be the best move at this point in time.

Varane will turn 31 before this season comes to an end and has not been playing at his best level lately. He has also dealt with a lot of fitness issues since moving to Manchester United a few years back.
