Real Madrid have one of the best back-lines in Europe. There is a reason why they won the treble last season and Carlo Ancelotti's experienced defence is partly the reason. After all, the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Nacho Fernandez and Dani Carvajal have played at the top level for a long time, so they were best-placed to dominate Europe and Spain.

However, the defence could have looked a lot different, had Real Madrid pounced on a transfer opportunity which was presented to them by the current Getafe owner a few years ago.

Speaking at the Getafe kit launch for the 2024/25 season, Getafe owner Ángel Torres spoke about the form of Marc Cucurella for Spain at EURO 2024 and mentioned Real Madrid.

In his own words, via 90min, Torres said: "I'm not surprised by the good Euros that Cucurella is doing; I offered him to Real Madrid when I was here, close to being done."

It is not the first "what if" story and it certainly won't be the last involving Real Madrid. After all, as the footballing capital of the world, Real are often at the top of a players wishes, so agents and player representatives will often speak to Real Madrid first.

Marc Cucurella is making a name for himself after leaving Getafe in 2021. He originally played for Brighton and Hove Albion for one season, impressing on his debut Premier League campaign before being sniped by Chelsea in 2022. Since then, Cucurella has made 45 Premier League appearances for the Blues and it must be said that he has underwhelmed at club level.

However, Chelsea fans hope that Cucurella's impressive performances at EURO 2024 will inspire him to elevate a level at Stamford Bridge.

If Real Madrid were still interested in signing Marc Cucurella, now would be the time to do it. After all, they are in the market for a left-back signing, after the Alphonso Davies deal fell through. Nothing concrete has been reported on Madrid's interest in Cucurella at this stage, though.

Do you think Marc Cucurella would have been successful at Real Madrid?
