A report coming out of Spain left football fans around the world confused today. As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Kylian Mbappe's future is closer to FC Barcelona than Real Madrid. More confusing details were discussed in the report, even talking about how Los Blancos were not only willing to withdraw from the race but also recommend the Frenchman's entourage to sign for the Catalan giants.

Of course, all of this came out of the blue and was unexpected, leaving supporters of both clubs confused. Why would Real Madrid not only pull out of the Mbappe race but also suggest he sign for Barcelona?

Well, that is because it was seemingly not a report to be taken seriously. The answer lies in the calendar. December 28 is 'El Dia de Los Inocentes' which is the equivalent of April Fool's Day in much of the Spanish-speaking world.

So, this seems to be merely a prank story. But one that certainly managed to convince many people and was even picked out by some outlets. As one reads through the report, it becomes quite clear though that it is filled with tongue-in-cheek humour.

What is the actual situation involving Real Madrid and Mbappe though? For years, he has been linked with the club and next summer looks like the perfect time to make that happen.

Mbappe's current deal with PSG runs out next summer. And so far, an extension with the Ligue 1 giants does not seem to be close.

There have also been suggestions that Real Madrid will present an offer to Mbappe this January, when he is free to discussing terms with other teams. But Los Blancos want the Frenchman to make his decision soon or they will turn their attention elsewhere.
