Kylian Mbappe reveals Real Madrid’s change to Champions League plan
By Kian Long
As Real Madrid look to repeat the Champions League win, Kylian Mbappe has revealed a change to their strategy.
Real Madrid continued their unbeaten streak in the UEFA Champions League last night. While the affair did look tough at times, Real Madrid were the ultimate winners against VfB Stuttgart.
The champions could win the Champions League again. Carlo Ancelotti is a manager who is not satisfied with success and would always like to chase the next best thing, so they are best-placed to repeat the win from last season.
This season, Real Madrid have strengthened compared to the last. One of those upgrades includes Kylian Mbappe, who unsurprisingly opened his Champions League account for Real Madrid last night.
Kylian Mbappe reveals Real Madrid’s change to Champions League plan
Speaking after the win last night, Kylian Mbappe claimed that due to the changing nature of the Champions League format, Real Madrid plan to go all-in early on.
Real Madrid understand the merits of getting a headstart in the Champions League, so they will hope to secure the qualification to the knockout stages as early as possible.
Real Madrid can do this by finishing anywhere inside the top eight (for instant qualification). Finishing from 9th to 24th would enter Real Madrid into a play-off round, so even more games.
In his own words (via UEFA), Kylian Mbappe said: "We know that the Champions League (format) has changed, so we know that we have to win quickly to qualify."
Even if it is only to avoid the extra games, it is in Real Madrid's best interest to finish within the top eight. Currently, they are fifth in the table but more games will be played this evening.
If Real Madrid continue their win streak and make some ground on the rest of the table, Carlo Ancelotti could even afford to rotate his squad for the remaining group stage matches.
To afford this luxury, though, Real Madrid must keep winning, a task which Kylian Mbappe is ambitious to achieve.
Next up for Real Madrid in the Champions League, they will face Lille. After this, they will repeat the final last season, by facing Borussia Dortmund. So, the games do not get easier for Real Madrid.
It remains to be seen whether the new Champions League format continues to impress. However, it can be said that last night, teams seemed far more eager to play attacking football.
