Real Madrid have already clinched La Liga and can now move their focus towards the Champions League, where they have a semi-final second leg coming up against Bayern Munich. One of the most impressive things about their success this season is the fact that this is just the beginning of a new era for Los Blancos, with the squad filled with youngsters nowhere near their primes.
On the other hand, an era is coming to an end for Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp will be leaving at the end of the season. And could that mean the departure of a few of their best players as well?
Virgil van Dijk, the club captain, is someone whose future seems to be in doubt. His current deal is set to run out in the summer of 2025 and with Klopp leaving, could he view this as the right time to try out a new adventure as well?
Graeme Souness seems to believe that Real Madrid could be a possible destination for Van Dijk. As reported by AS, the former Liverpool player said:
"I am concerned that Virgil van Dijk's contract is about to expire. In July he turns 33 and if his agent called the sporting director of Real Madrid they would take him away."
Liverpool superstar tipped for Real Madrid move
It would be unlike Real Madrid to sign a player in the twilight of his career. Even someone as good as Van Dijk, who is arguably the best defender of his generation.
Of course, never say never in football. But it would be a real surprise if we end up seeing Van Dijk in a Real Madrid someday.
Real Madrid already have an ageing backline. Nacho Fernandez, Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba are all past 30 years of age. Adding another veteran to the defence does not seem like the best step forward. It is far more likely that they would bring in someone like Leny Yoro instead, who is 18 years of age and has his whole career ahead of him.
