Manchester United need to strengthen in a number of positions across the pitch as Erik ten Hag's team are struggling at the moment. The hope was that the comeback win over Aston Villa would turn things around but they followed it up with a loss against Nottingham Forest. Could a former Real Madrid defender be the solution to their problems?

Real Madrid have let go of a number of youngsters in recent years, without giving them a proper chance, who are shining elsewhere. Miguel Gutierrez is someone who falls under that category.

Gutierrez is having the season of his life right now, playing a major part in Girona's unlikely La Liga title challenge. The club currently sit at second, on the equal number of points as Real Madrid. They are very much in the race.

Of course, Gutierrez's performances have caught the eye of many clubs around Europe. A return to Real Madrid has been speculated about. But several other teams seems to be interested as well, including Manchester United.

As reported by The Sun, Manchester United are looking to use the January transfer window to strengthen at full-back. They have sent a scout to closely watch Gutierrez on multiple occasions in recent weeks.

It is believed that Manchester United highly value Gutierrez for his football IQ. He has missed only one match for Girona this season.

The 22-year-old left-back could be an excellent addition for Manchester United. Real Madrid might be the ones holding most of the cards though. They are believed to have not only a 50% sell-on clause in Gutierrez's deal but a buyback clause as well.

Real Madrid could certainly do with another left-back. But they have been more heavily linked with Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich.
