Real Madrid had a chance to cut the gap between themselves and FC Barcelona this weekend, but they could not take full advantage of the opportunity. They did lead their game against Atletico Madrid until the 95th minute before Angel Correa found a way past Thibaut Courtois. It was certainly an eventful night for the Belgian goalkeeper.
Atletico Madrid fans were not happy with Courtois' celebrations after the opener. Of course, it is worth pointing out that the Belgian played for the Los Rojiblancos once upon a time, on loan from Chelsea. The game had to be suspended for a while after objects were thrown onto the pitch.
Courtois also picked up a muscle problem on the day. The extent of it remains unclear. If he does need some time out, Real Madrid have an exceptional backup option in Andriy Lunin.
Lunin was expected to leave Real Madrid but signed a long-term extension, pretty much out of nowhere. Yet, some of Europe's top clubs remain interested in his signature.
Manchester United and Man City both want Real Madrid player
As reported by Fichajes, Lunin is on the radar of several clubs, including Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester United. The possible departure of Ederson has led the Citizens to seek a quality replacement, and the Real Madrid goalkeeper seems to fit that profile perfectly.
Of course, if a club like Manchester City offered him a starting role, one would think that Lunin would want to leave. It is better than sitting on the bench at Santiago Bernabeu for sure.
Let's see how the situation plays out though. He signed an extension very recently and we do not know what assurances have been made to him. Is he being lined up as the club's number one when it is time to replace Courtois? Time shall tell.
