Last night was simply another day at the office as Carlo Ancelotti lifted the UEFA Super Cup with Real Madrid. However, trophies have not lost their magic touch on Real Madrid. In fact, with every piece of silverware lifted, Los Blancos only become hungrier and hungrier to achieve more.
In truth, Atalanta held their nerve well and showed why they deserve to be in the UEFA Champions League this season. As the master of Italian football, Carlo Ancelotti would have expected this from Atalanta, who controlled the game well. However, a five-star display from Jude Bellingham was enough to exploit the minimal pockets of space.
That said, after the win was secured courtesy of goals from Federico Valverde and Kylian Mbappe, it was confirmed that Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti had broken a UEFA Super Cup record.
Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti break the UEFA Super Cup record
Heading into this match, Real Madrid were tied on the number of UEFA Super Cups won (5) with FC Barcelona and AC Milan. Also, Carlo Ancelotti was tied on the number of UEFA Super Cups won as a manager (4) with Pep Guardiola. Both of those were the respective records, so both Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti had the opportunities to set a new record, which they did.
Now, Real Madrid are the all-time most successful club in the UEFA Super Cup with six wins and Carlo Ancelotti is the all-time most successful manager in the UEFA Super Cup with five wins. That has to count for something.
Real Madrid have set the precedent of "record breakers, history makers" throughout their rich history as a club. They have won the most amount of Champions Leagues and La Ligas already, but now they can add the UEFA Super Cup to this list. It also helps that they are currently managed by one of the all-time greats, Carlo Ancelotti, who is still hungry to win silverware, even at 65.
An honourable mention must also go to Luka Modric, who had a pretty special night himself. The Real Madrid midfielder and club legend established himself as the most decorated Real Madrid player in history, winning his 27th trophy.
Long story short, it was a monumental night for Los Blancos and one which will surely set them on the path for more success in the upcoming season.
Hala Madrid y nada más.
