Many fans view centre-back as a kind of a problem position for Real Madrid right now. David Alaba and Eder Militao suffered long-term injuries last season. In fact, the former is yet to recover and the hope is that he will be back before the end of the year. On the other hand, Nacho Fernandez brought an end to his time at Santiago Bernabeu, whose academy ranks he came up through, by leaving this summer.

So, ideally, one would like Real Madrid to sign a centre-back this summer. Unfortunately, they have already missed out on a couple of centre-backs they were linked with earlier in the window.

Leny Yoro, who was rumoured to be the club's top centre-back target, has joined Manchester United. Riccardo Calafiori has moved to Arsenal after an excellent 23/24 season.

Now, it looks like there is another Italian defender that Real Madrid were interested in. But the move does not appear to be a possibility this summer.

Real Madrid were willing to pay €30-40m transfer fee to sign Inter Milan player

As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid were willing to pay a fee between €30 million and €40 million for Alessandro Bastoni. That offer was totally insufficient for Inter Milan, who if they were to transfer him, would not do so for an amount less than €80 million.

Considering Real Madrid's transfer activity in recent years, it is hard to imagine them shelling out a €80 million transfer fee on a centre-back this summer. But at the same time, it is almost impossible for them to sign a proven player like Bastoni for the figure they seem to be willing to shell out for the move.

At this moment, it looks like that Real Madrid will stick with the options they have at centre-back. If the situation calls for it, Aurelien Tchouameni has shown that he can fill in there.
