Real Madrid have assembled a formidable squad for both the present and the future. They have seen a number of iconic players depart in recent years and youngsters have come in to fill their spots in the squad. However, there is still one major position that needs to be filled if the club want to be the best team in Europe for the next decade or so.

With the departure of Karim Benzema to Al-Ittihad in the summer, Real Madrid have been left without a long-term starting number 9. The club brought in Joselu on loan from Espanyol. He has done well too but the Spaniard is not a long-term solution.

There is one name that has been continuously linked with Real Madrid over the years. Obviously, it is none other than Kylian Mbappe.

The Frenchman has been linked with a move to Santiago Bernabeu for what seems like forever now. This January transfer window may be his last and best chance to make that happen.

Real Madrid give transfer deadline to Mbappe

As reported by The Athletic, Real Madrid will make a fresh attempt to sign Mbappe from PSG. But Los Blancos have made it clear to the French World Cup winner that, if he wants to join them, he must make a decision before mid-January.

Most people associated with Real Madrid, in any capacity, were left disappointed with Mbappe's decision to renew with PSG in the spring of 2022, when he had seemed destined to head to the Spanish capital. Could the move finally happen a couple of years later?

As of January 1, Mbappe will have only six months left on his contract at PSG and will be free to negotiate with other clubs over a potential move in the summer. Real Madrid do not seem keen for negotiations to drag on though. If things don't work out with the Frenchman quickly, they are expected to try to sign someone else.
