As proven time and time throughout history, international duty is not for every player. At least for right now, a Real Madrid legend has stepped down from international duty, as announced in an official social media statement today.

Thibaut Courtois announced via his social media channels that he is unavailable for selection by the Belgium national team. The decision is a result of Domenico Tedesco remaining in charge. The former RB Leipzig manager has managed the Belgium team since 2023 and it's fair to say that Courtois and Tedesco have never truly seen eye to eye.

So, Thibaut Courtois has announced that, at least while Tedesco is in charge of his national team, he will not represent Belgium. But why?

Real Madrid legend releases statement to quit international duty

The statement released by Thibaut Courtois himself said: "Unfortunately, following the events with the coach and after much reflection, I have decided not to return to the Belgian national team under his management," Courtois, who has 102 caps for Belgium, wrote on Instagram."

Courtois continued: "In this matter, I accept my share of responsibility. However, looking forward, my lack of confidence in him would not contribute to maintaining the necessary atmosphere of cordiality."

Thibaut Courtois has made 102 appearances for the Belgium national team. He is a true legend of the country but understandably, he doesn't feel valued by the 2023-present manager. Tedesco and Courtois had a very public falling out, after Courtois did not agree with the decision to remove his captain armband in favour of former Real Madrid player Eden Hazard.

So, what does Courtois' decision mean for Real Madrid? Well, it can only mean good things. At least, it limits the risk of injuries which can be picked up on international duty. It also means that whenever there is an international break while Tedesco is in charge, Courtois can focus on Real Madrid training and be both physically and mentally rested.

In recent history, the Belgium national team has had some world-class players, yet they have struggled to play as a collective. This is because, in truth, there have been constant spats between the players and the staff. Courtois is better off avoiding this at Real Madrid.

What do you predict this season for Thibaut Courtois?
