There have been some exceptional players throughout history who have played for both Real Madrid and Manchester United. To name just a few, there are Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham and Ruud van Nistelrooy. Over the last few seasons, the likes of Casemiro and Raphael Varane were added to this list.
Both Casemiro and Raphael Varane left behind a great reputation at Real Madrid and wished to match this reputation at fellow super-club Manchester United. Varane has recently left Man United, signing for Serie A side Como. Casemiro was believed to follow suit with a move from Old Trafford, but a move never materialised.
Real Madrid legend is unwanted at Manchester United but he’s stuck
Now, according to GiveMeSport, a shocking turn of events sees Casemiro in line for a Premier League start when Manchester United return to domestic action in a few weeks. This is because Casemiro missed out on a move to the Saudi Pro League and Manchester United have failed to sign Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain.
Therefore, Erik ten Hag will be forced to swallow his pride and start Casemiro in the opening Premier League fixture for Man United, when they host Fulham in a few weeks. It is worth noting that a week before the Premier League commences, Man United face their rivals Man City at Wembley Stadium in the Community Shield, so Casemiro is likely to play a role here too.
Casemiro has fallen out of form and he is a shadow of the player he was at Real Madrid. In fact, his legacy at Man United is in question, after the Brazilian slotted in disastrously at centre-back towards the tail-end of last season. The likes of Jamie Carragher questioned his mentality and whether he was the right fit for Man United. In fact, Carragher said Casemiro should consider a step-down (BBC).
Of course, there is always a question about whether Real Madrid should consider a home-coming for Casemiro, with Toni Kroos hanging up his boots. However, with all things considered, it wouldn't be worthwhile. As things stand, with bonuses pocketed, Casemiro earns £450,000 per week at Manchester United, so paying this wage would not be financially sensible for Real Madrid.
That said, Casemiro could be given a chance to redeem himself at Man United, with the transfer window open for a couple of weeks after the English league season begins. The likes of Jamie Carragher are silly to question Casemiro's ability to play for United. He was once one of the best midfielders in the world and he can atune that once again under the right coach.
Do you think Casemiro will stay at Manchester United this summer?
