Real Madrid are actively seeking a new defender to sign in the summer transfer window. It has been reported last month that Carlo Ancelotti prioritises the signing of Leny Yoro from LOSC Lille and if recent news is anything to go by, then the French defender is keen on a move to Real Madrid too.

However, this does not prevent Carlo Ancelotti and Florentino Perez from seeking reassurances. After all, they know better than most that a transfer is not complete until it is confirmed and all the right documents are signed. Therefore, they are seeking a potential Arsenal transfer raid if Leny Yoro falls through.

According to a report from Caught Offside, Real Madrid would like to sign William Saliba from Arsenal, if their other options fail. However, the French defender is also wanted by Paris Saint-Germain, after they were impressed by the defender's time in Ligue 1 and of course, the French national team.

It is often difficult for defenders to make the limelight. After all, it is more often than not the attackers who get all the praise and recognition. However, William Saliba's performances for the last two seasons have made him a recognisable figure and he is now a household name in the Premier League. In fact, many would argue he has overtaken Virgil van Dijk as the league's best centre back.

Arsenal would obviously like to keep ahold of William Saliba. He has become one of their best and most important players. It was shown in the 2022/23 campaign what can happen at Arsenal when he is out of the starting lineup, as many Arsenal fans believe that Saliba's injury is what cost them the Premier League title that season.

Saliba is a composed defender who approaches his defensive duties with great aplomb. He likes to play as the last man and he is excellent at one-on-one situations. What is most impressive about Saliba is that he is not too aggressive, but he manages to get the job done tidily and not to the detriment of his team.

Of course, this is different to what Real Madrid are used to. Great centre backs of the past including Sergio Ramos and Pepe were known for their aggressive approaches. However, this is the new direction of the sport and whether Real Madrid sign Leny Yoro or William Saliba, it is a switch which fans will appreciate.
