Needless to say, Real Madrid and Liverpool have seen some incredible players throughout their respective rich histories. On a few occasions, some legends of the game have graced both cities, with the most notable being Xabi Alonso. That said, there is a current Real Madrid player whose career path could've looked a little different.

Real Madrid superstar recalls when Liverpool failed to sign him

According to a report from 90min, Rodrygo has recalled the decision he made in 2017 to turn down Liverpool. The report states that Rodrygo was close to moving to Liverpool from Santos but the move broke down because Rodyrgo wanted to stay with Santos for longer, to develop his playing style.

In his own words, Rodrygo said: "We didn't close the deal because I didn't want to, I wanted to stay at Santos even though the offer was very good. The pathway they promised me would also have been very good for my career. I was going to finish my studies in England to prepare for European football. It had always been my dream to play in Europe... It's true, I almost went to Liverpool."

In hindsight, sticking with Santos for longer was the best possible decision that a young Rodrygo could make at the time. Of course, he had every possibility of making a name for himself at Anfield Stadium since Jurgen Klopp is one of the best in the business at developing young players. However, his game time would not have been great initially.

Sticking with Santos to develop granted Rodrygo with the incredible opportunity to represent Real Madrid later down the line. The is the ultimate career dream for most young players in Europe so for Rodrygo to not only sign for Real Madrid but ultimately become a crucial player for them, shows he made the right decision as a youngster.

Just last night, Rodrygo proved his worth to the world stage as he scored against Manchester City in the Champions League quarterfinal. This goal, alongside his brace in La Liga at the weekend, brought his tally to 16 goals and seven assists (all comps). A remarkable return for Rodrygo, who is one of Real Madrid's most improved players this season.

Time will tell if Rodrygo remains a Real Madrid player next season. After all, Arsenal are keen to sign him. However, if his performances this season are anything to go by, then Real Madrid must do everything in their power to keep the Brazilian.
